IBM Targets Media and Entertainment with Strategic Acquisition

In its latest step to becoming a cloud powerhouse, IBM (News - Alert) has acquired cloud-based video services provider Clearleap, Inc. The company’s offering will be integrated into the IBM Cloud platform and will enable enterprises and media and entertainment (M&E) companies to easily manage, expand and monetize user video experiences while delivering them via the web and mobile devices.

Clearleap’s open API framework meshes well with IBM’s open source initiatives in cloud infrastructure and services. Video services will be available via IBM Cloud data centers globally, and APIs will be available on IBM Bluemix in 2016, letting customers easily build new video services and solutions. Clearleap’s platform also includes subscription and monetization services.

"This comes together for a client when any content can be delivered quickly and economically to any device in the most natural way."

The acquisition follows IBM’s purchase of Cleversafe last month, a company that provides object-based storage software and appliances for storing, managing and retrieving unstructured data – like large video files. Last year IBM scooped up Aspera (News - Alert), which offers technology for speeding up large data transfers over broadband networks. The three key acquisitions will come together in the IBM Cloud to create an enterprise-grade offering for developing and managing video services within an open, cloud-based environment.

Clearleap brings some strategic customers to the table for IBM, including HBO, the NFL, Time Warner (News - Alert) Cable and Verizon. The company’s scalable platform is already being used throughout the M&E industry by millions of subscribers.
