Indiana FreedomWorks Cheers 'Choose Your Cable' Bill

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Indiana chapter of FreedomWorks cheered the introduction of new legislation that would eliminate unnecessary and burdensome telecommunications regulation and open up the cable television marketplace to allow consumers in the Hoosier state the benefits of increased competition in video programming: more choices ... better service ... competitive prices.

SB 245, introduced by State Senator Brandt Hershman (R-7) takes a bold step towards modernizing Indiana telecommunications laws that have not been seriously addressed since their inception 21 years ago.
Specifically, Sen. Hershman's legislation modernizes existing law to encourage economic growth and healthy competition. The bill seeks to promote growth and competition among all technologies and would also address the problem of costly and burdensome franchise laws that make it difficult for new providers to compete with local cable television companies.
Indiana will be a major target of the larger 2006 FreedomWorks "Choose Your Cable" campaign which promotes pro-growth, pro-competition telecommunications legislation like Sen. Hershman's at both the state and federal level. Last year, FreedomWorks helped to pass a similar bill in Texas through an integrated campaign that included extensive activist education, targeted grassroots lobbying, and both print and television advertising. In addition to the federal strategy, FreedomWorks expects to employ these same tactics in Indiana, as well as several other states including Missouri, Kansas, California, Ohio, Michigan, and New Jersey.
FreedomWorks Co-Chairman Dick Armey commented, "On behalf of the more than 12,000 FreedomWorks members in Indiana, we salute Sen. Hershman's efforts to update and modernize the state's telecommunications laws. By promoting competition and ushering in exciting new technologies, SB 245 will offer cable consumers more choices and more innovation, which keeps prices in check while providing consumers the latest technologies. When businesses have to compete for customers, the customers win."
