Toshiba's New 1.8-Inch HDD Achieves 160GB -- World's Highest Capacity for Consumer Electronics Applications

IRVINE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD), the industry leader in 1.8-inch form factor hard disk drives (HDDs), today announced a 160 gigabyte(1) CE-ATA HDD, the largest(2) capacity in this small form factor HDD class. The new drive is Toshiba's first to feature the CE-ATA interface, which has been designed for optimal performance and power utilization in portable media players (PMP) and other consumer electronics (CE) products.

In addition to the two-platter, 8-millimeter high 160GB MK1626GCB 1.8-inch HDD, Toshiba introduced the 80GB MK8022GAA, a single-platter, 5-millimeter high 1.8-inch HDD to provide a thinner and lighter alternative for PATA-based CE applications. This new 1.8-inch family employs improved read-write heads and media with an enhanced magnetic layer to achieve an areal density of 353 megabits per square millimeter (228 gigabits per square inch).

Packing larger data capacities into small form factor HDDs will drive continued advances in the PMP market to meet growing demand for personal digital media supporting high-capacity video, photo and audio applications.

"Toshiba's new 1.8-inch HDDs build on our long-time leadership in this key product segment and gives CE manufacturers the tools to create smaller, lighter and more compelling handheld devices," said Scott Maccabe, vice president and general manager of Toshiba Storage Device Division. "Storage is an integral part of the digital experience, and these small form factor HDDs deliver the capacity, power efficiency and throughput to support, if not accelerate, consumer demand for sophisticated portable computing, multimedia and entertainment devices."

HDDs are now used in a wide variety of applications spanning both the IT and CE arenas with integration into PMPs, digital audio players, digital video recorders, copiers, mobile PCs and more. The market has demonstrated a voracious appetite for larger storage capacities, as broadband Internet and more powerful, rich media applications bring audio-visual (AV) capabilities to new products, particularly PMPs, tablets and mobile PCs. With the introduction of this high-capacity HDD, Toshiba is enabling CE manufacturers to meet consumer needs for storing and enjoying large media files, such as home videos, high-definition movies, digital music collections and personal photo libraries.

In addition to increased capacity, Toshiba has significantly reduced the power consumption(3) of the 160GB HDD to 0.002W/GB, which is 33 percent less than the previous 1.8-inch 100GB model, demonstrating Toshiba's continued commitment to energy efficiency measures and compliance with Japan's Energy Conservation Law. In addition, both drives offer more environmentally friendly designs and comply with the EU's RoHS directive(4), which came into force in July 2006.

Toshiba's new 1.8-inch HDDs are being integrated by OEM partners for consumer products slated for the holiday season. The company will showcase the new family at DISKCON USA 2007 on Sept. 19-20 in Santa Clara, Calif. (1) One Gigabyte (1 GB) means 10 = 1,000,000,000 bytes using powers of 10. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1 GB = 2 = 1,073,741,824 bytes, and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity will also be less if the computer includes one or more pre-installed operating systems, pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.

(2) The industry's largest commercially available capacity in a 1.8-inch hard disk drive, as of Sept. 5, 2007 (source: Toshiba)

(3) Excludes power consumption from recording capacity, both of which are defined by Japan's Energy Conservation Law.

(4) The RoHS Directive is European Union legislation that restricts the use of six hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
