Former Arendell Parrott Academy Headmaster, Greene County Schools Superintendent Steve Mazingo named Edgecombe County Schools interim superintendent

Feb 18, 2010 (The Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- On the heels of his resignation from Arendell Parrott Academy, Steve Mazingo accepted an interim superintendent position this week with Edgecombe County Schools, which will take effect next month.

"This doesn't mean I am coming out of retirement," Mazingo said. "Edgecombe is a good system and I look forward to helping them out over the next five months while they look for a new superintendent." The Edgecombe County Board of Education approved Mazingo for the interim position Monday night. Mazingo will fill current superintendent Craig Witherspoon's seat after Witherspoon leaves next month for another superintendent job with Birmingham City Schools in Alabama.

For over 34 years, Mazingo worked as a finance officer, principal, assistant superintendent, superintendent and math teacher in Greene, Pender and Onslow counties. He retired from Greene County Schools on July 1, 2008 where he served as superintendent to become the headmaster at Parrott.

"He is well-qualified to fill the interim superintendent position in Edgecombe County," Greene County Schools Superintendent Patrick Miller said.

Miller was named superintendent for Greene County Schools in 2008 when Mazingo left to work for APA.

Mazingo didn't offer any explanation for his resignation to APA officials in November when he left.

Hugh Pollock, who is currently serving as the interim APA headmaster, said shortly after Mazingo resigned that academy officials thought Mazingo would have stayed at the academy for at least 10 years.

Mazingo said Wednesday that he really didn't want to comment on why he left APA last year.

"It didn't work out like I thought it would," said Mazingo, about the APA headmaster position. "I was ready to retire and that was a majority of the reason why I left." Chris Lavender can be reached at 252-559-1078 or [email protected].
