Public safety scanner available on website

Jun 05, 2011 (Appeal-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- In the latest enhancement to the Appeal-Democrat's website, a public safety scanner has been added to the site's home page, allowing users to keep informed about incidents involving local law enforcement and protection agencies.

The scanner, located under the video player area at appealdemocrat.com, monitors the frequencies of more than a dozen local agencies live, 24 hours a day, including: Yuba, Sutter and Colusa County sheriff's departments; Yuba City police and fire; Marysville police and fire; the California Highway Patrol; Yuba, Sutter and Colusa County fire; and CalFire (foothills and Grass Valley command center).

"The newspaper is very pleased to offer this content enhancement to its online users," said Editor Len La Barth. "The scanner offers users real-time information at their fingertips." In addition to being available at appealdemocrat.com, the public safety scanner can be downloaded as an app by Android phone users. Download "Scanner Radio" and then search for the scanner titled "Yuba, Sutter and Colusa Counties Public Safety, CalFire and CHP." The scanner area of the appealdemocrat.com home page also includes links to our online crime map, police blotter page, crime reports page and the CHP incident website. There's also a link to scanner code definitions.

The scanner was originally hosted by a Plumas Lake resident who had to take it down after he moved. He assisted in getting it set up on appealdemocrat.com.

"This is a great online resource that we can provide Yuba, Sutter and Colusa counties residents with more information on what's going on in their community," said Courtney Lopez, the paper's Internet operations director.
