Time Warner donation enables students to attend Alamo Colleges' robotic camps [La Prensa (San Antonio, TX)]

(La Prensa (San Antonio, TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Thanks to a $6,000 gift from Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative, 36 local middle school students are participating in the Alamo Colleges' robotics camps this summer at Northwest Vista College, Northeast Lakeview College and St. Philip's College's Southwest Campus.

To further support the effort, Time Warner Cable employees will be on hand at each camp to present a short curriculum on digital technology and provide the participants with free CAMM T-shirts. Participants funded by the scholarship were selected on a first come, first serve basis after demonstrating financial need.

At Northwest Vista Colleges, SpaceTEAMS advanced robotics camps and a 3D computer game design camp will take place this week. The SpaceTEAMS summer camps began at Northwest Vista College in 2006 as a program for elementary, middle, and high school students.

The week of July 25, an introductory robotics camp will be held at Northeast Lakeview College. From August 8-12, the final summer introductory robotics camp will take place at St. Philip's College's Southwest Campus in the new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Center of Excellence.

The SpaceTEAMS Robotics program is a fun and interactive hands-on experience that gives participants a chance to design and build robots. Successful robot builders must employ mechanical, electrical and software engineering, systems thinking, creativity and teamwork to succeed in their efforts.

As students learn to design and build their robots, the hope is that they will become interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education and careers. The program specifically targets students who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM career fields.

At the Alamo Colleges, highquality education and low costs provide exceptional value to students and alumni who are major contributors to the economy and culture of our community.
