Symmetricom's SSU 2000 Release 6.2 Debuts with Dramatic Increase in IEEE 1588 Capacity and Increased Network Security

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Symmetricom®, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYMM), a worldwide leader in precision time and frequency technologies, today announced the launch and availability of the release 6.2 enhancement of its SSU 2000, a robust and fully manageable system that generates and distributes precise synchronization signals for both traditional SONET/SDH networks and modern Ethernet/IP networks. This latest release was designed to improve network management security and dramatically increase system capacity for networks using the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110829/AQ59077LOGO) Important new capabilities with the SSU 2000 release 6.2 include: Security: A new communications module and software that supports RADIUS access security which is a widely deployed remote access authentication, authorization and accounting protocol. The 6.2 release also supports secure shell (SSH) and secure FTP (SFTP) to further enhance network security by encrypting user authentication traffic and protecting transfer of firmware upgrades.

Scalability: Precision Time Protocol (PTP) capacity has more than tripled, increasing to 400 clients per module, making the SSU 2000 one of the highest capacity systems in the market today. The IEEE 1588 PTP standard is the fast-growing technology for more precise synchronization of packet-based networks. The high capacity and precise timing provided by the SSU 2000 is particularly important as mobile backhaul networks evolve to support 4G/LTE.

SyncE and Future Network Support: The SSU 2000 is a flexible platform supporting the introduction and migration to Synchronous Ethernet transport technology. SyncE allows operators to introduce Ethernet elements into existing SONET/SDH networks without overhauling the synchronization and timing of the network. SyncE, along with PTP and carrier-grade NTP, position the SSU 2000 for all future carrier network needs.

"The SSU 2000 continues to be the leading, timing and synchronization platform for carriers worldwide," said Manish Gupta, vice president of marketing at Symmetricom. "Increasing security protection and enhancing PTP capacity with this release of SSU 2000, Symmetricom continues to invest in this widely deployed platform to meet evolving customer and market demands." The SSU 2000 release 6.2 integrates functional modules into a flexible, fully redundant system. Designed with an intelligent architecture, each SSU module has an integrated CPU running the system software. This approach has allowed the SSU 2000 platform to remain on the forefront with new capabilities as networks evolve from TDM (SONET and SDH) to packet-based transport using NTP, PTP and SyncE. Applications for the SSU 2000 include: Synchronization Supply Unit (SSU), Primary Reference Source (PRS), Building Integrated TimingSupply (BITS) and Subtending Timing Signal Generator. The product is Network Equipment Building System (NEBS) certified meeting safety and reliability standards and is also available in an ETSI-standard configuration.
