Central News, Kyrgyz Service Video Projects Share Multimedia Category WinNov 09, 2012 (Radio Free Europe Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- In Russia, Afghanistan, and Georgia, Preserving The Written Word Player cannot play this media /**/In Russia, Afghanistan, and Georgia, Preserving The Written Word November 9, 2012 "In Russia, Afghanistan, and Georgia, Preserving The Written Word" -- CNR & Russian & Georgian services This joint effort by the Central Newsroom and the Russian and Georgian services on cursive writing -- also known as script writing, running writing, or more commonly, just handwriting -- is really a creative way of highlighting how this old practice is on its way out and being replaced by modern technological tools. With this style of penmanship, the centuries-old practice of calligraphy (which in Greek means "beautiful writing") is also being phased out, as our staff member and calligrapher Mustafa Sarwar points out in this video. It's a great effort and hard work on the part of the three services, linking the videos about Russia, Afghanistan, and Georgia and knitting them together with a well-written script to highlight the importance of the subject of cursive writing. Also, this is a creative idea which touches on an infrequently discussed subject in a way that sensitizes any viewer to the importance of the tradition of cursive writing. --------------------------------------- "Incidents and Tragedies at the Border Patrol" -- Kyrgyz Service This brilliantly framed video by the Kyrgyz Service shows the frustration of soldiers who are turning their guns on each others. The Kyrgyz journalists did a brilliant job by traveling to this remote region on the Kyrgyz-Chinese border to come back with a true picture of the situation. The subject is strong -- 19 deaths in 11 months -- and so are the visuals, the camera frames, the graphics, and the narration. The border region can be extremely difficult to get to, but the reporter and VJ traveled the long distance to unveil the human sufferings that have otherwise been ignored by rest of the media. This video also had an immediate impact, because after it was aired by the Kyrgyz Service's TV program, the parliament took up the issue for discussion, thus providing hope for the families of those serving in the border regions.
