One of the best ways to keep costs down for a new smartphone is to sell your old one while it's still worth something. But what if you could help a soldier in the U.S. armed forces in the deal, too
That little trick is possible for users of SmartphoneTradeIn.com, a new Miramar-based website that pays cash for used iPhone, Blackberry and Android devices. The company recently launched a partnership with Operation Gratitude, a national nonprofit that sends care packages -- filled with snacks, stuffed animals, comic books, thank-you letters and other items of appreciation -- to U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other hostile areas overseas, as well as to their children left behind.
For every device Smartphone
TradeIn.com purchases from consumers, it will contribute $5 to Operation Gratitude. That amount is on top of what is paid to the consumer.
If your device is among the 200 models listed on the site, the company will cover the cost to ship it via the post office or FedEx, test the item for functionality and appearance and then make an offer. If you accept, a check will be sent within a couple of days. If your smartphone is in excellent condition, you'll earn a 25 percent bonus.
For example, an iPhone 4S (64 GB) may fetch $200 in regular condition but up to $250 in excellent condition.
