Nokia back in the smartphone game with Lumia 920 [Gulf News (United Arab Emirates)]

(Gulf News (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dubai: Nokia is optimistic that Microsoft's new Windows Phone 8 handset will revive its fortunes and help it regain its lost market share, Tom Farrell, vice-president, Nokia Middle East, told Gulf News.

"The Middle East is one of the top key markets for Nokia and continues to be strongly committed to this region. This is testament with UAE and Saudi Arabia being among the six global markets for Nokia to introduce the new Lumia range with Arabic language support," he said.

The availability of a new user interface in the "local language" combined with strong operator offerings are two key elements in satisfying demands of consumers from the region. Nokia on Monday launched tow models Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 in the UAE.

"We are confident that the most innovative smartphone the Lumia 920 will be a milestone for the company as a whole and this is to prove that we are back in the game," Farrell said.

Du and Mobily become the exclusive telecom carriers for the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The phone will be available from November 25. The Lumia 920 is priced at Dh2,499 and Lumia 820 at Dh1.899.

The Finnish giant has placed a bet on WP8 devices hoping to achieve desirable yields.

"In general I think that WP8 is a good platform in terms of usability and what it has in terms of personalisation. They launched several interesting new features with WP8 such as Kid's Corner that appeal to families and not only to individuals," Annette Zimmermann, principal analyst at Gartner, told Gulf News.

No Nokia phone based on Windows Phone 7 can be upgraded to Windows Phone 8.

"There are five distinct areas of differentiation in Lumia 920 imaging, wireless charging, screen, location and music," he said.

"Our pre-stocks stocks have been sold out within 10 days. Microsoft has around more than 120,000 apps plus we have around 5,000 Arabic apps," Farrell said.

According to analysts, Nokia's mapping and location-based apps will stand apart from the other Windows Phone 8 devices.

The Lumia 920′s 4.5 inch display has a resolution of 1280 by 768 pixels, giving it that "crisp" look that the phone needs to go toe-to-toe with the iPhone. It also sports improved hardware, including a new camera that uses PureView Technology.

Using advanced floating lens technology, the camera in the Nokia Lumia 920 is able to take in five times more light than competing smartphones without using flash, making it possible to capture clear, bright pictures and video indoors and at night.

The Lumia 920 also comes with Nokia City Lens giving a new dimension to augmented reality.
