VX boys basketball rankings: Nov. 26

Nov 26, 2012 (East Valley Tribune (Mesa - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- There were tournaments galore last week, which has led to mass movement. Here are the updated rankings, as of Nov. 26: Division I 1. Cesar Chavez 4-0 2. Pinnacle 0-0 3. Dobson 4-1 4. Mesa 3-1 5. Desert Mountain 3-1 6. Gilbert 3-1 7. Mountain View 1-0 8. Red Mountain 4-0 9. Brophy 4-0 10. Corona del Sol 3-1 It was a parity-filled week at the top of the standings, as four of the Tribune's preseason top-5 teams lost a game. Cesar Chavez had the most impressive performance, defeating Chaparral in the semifinals and Desert Mountain in the title game to win the Paradise Valley Invitational. Pinnacle hasn't played but moved up a spot to No. 2 by virtue of Dobson and Mesa losses. Dobson, which is expected to be without star small forward Kodi Justice for at least another week with a foot injury, lost its season opener to Poston Butte but rebounded to finish the week with four straight wins. Mesa lost its opener to Hamilton but beat Gilbert by a point in overtime for the Fear the Hop tournament title. Desert Mountain had a solid win over Paradise Valley before the close loss to Chavez. Gilbert moves up a spot after beating Corona in the Fear the Hop semifinals before the loss to the Jackrabbits. Mountain View cruised past Fairfax and moves up a spot. Red Mountain won the Salpointe Tip-Off classic and has wins against Saguaro and Nogales already to jump into the top-10 at No. 8. Brophy won the Arrowhead Desert Classic and has wins over Sierra Linda and Westview to move in at No. 9. Corona del Sol drops to No. 10 after a so-so opening week, and even though North (3-0) and Chaparral (P.V. Invitational semifinalists) had solid weeks, there is a squeeze in the top-10 right now so they drop out.

Division II 1. Poston Butte 5-0 2. Paradise Valley 3-1 3. Nogales 3-1 4. Sierra Linda 3-1 5. Shadow Mountain 5-0 6. Salpointe 3-1 7. Saguaro 2-2 8. Greenway 1-1 9. Queen Creek 0-0 10. Thunderbird 2-1 The clear winner this week in Division II was Poston Butte, which beat Division I top-ranked Dobson and went on to win the Catalina Hardwood Classic by beating Sahuaro in the title game. Paradise Valley was blown out by Desert Mountain but did have solid wins over Perry and Chaparral, so the Trojans only drop a spot to No. 2. Nogales made it to the finals of the Salpointe Tip-Off Classic before losing to Red Mountain, which moves it up to No. 3. Sierra Linda suffered a blowout loss to Brophy but had a good win over Thunderbird and drops two spots. Shadow Mountain won the Safeway Classic to jump up to No. 5, while Salpointe moves up to No. 6 with a good showing in its tournament. Saguaro lost a pair of games by one point to Red Mountain and Salpointe and didn't have Ryan Berg, so while the Sabercats move down three spots, they could be back in the top-5 soon. Greenway, Queen Creek and Thunderbird stay at the bottom of the top-10.

Division III 1. Gilbert Christian 1-0 2. Snowflake 0-0 3. Valley Christian 0-0 4. Scottsdale Christian 0-0 5. Chinle 1-0 Not too much action quite yet. Gilbert Christian won by 60 in its debut and Chinle also won its first game. No movement.

Division IV 1. Duncan 1-0 2. Yuma Catholic 0-0 3. Joy Christian 2-0 4. Desert Christian 3-1 5. Arizona Lutheran 0-0 Desert Christian lost to Ray in the Boyd Baker tournament to drop from the top spot. Duncan, Yuma Catholic and Joy Christian each move up a spot. Arizona Lutheran hasn't played yet and sticks at No. 5.
