Odessa, Permian high school students to receive scholarships

Dec 11, 2012 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Thirty students will benefit from scholarships to take online courses thanks to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and the Odessa Chamber of Commerce.

Seniors will receive the scholarships on Thursday at Permian and Odessa high schools, according to the Chamber.

The scholarships will cover tuition for an eight-week online university course, and success in that course will yield transferable university credits.

"Students need many pathways to post-secondary education and training. The Chamber recognizes and supports a number of university, community college, military and workforce options for students," said Mike George, president and CEO of the Odessa Chamber.

U-Scholar scholarship recipients were selected for their academic diligence and exemplary college readiness. Recipients can apply their scholarship to these courses: psychology 1301, sociology 1301, communications 1315 or art appreciation 1301.

Courses are administered by top Texas professors and resulting credits will be accepted by all Texas public universities. Most out-of-state universities also accept U-Scholar credits.
