Sutter ex-dispatcher gets year in jail for embezzlementDec 22, 2012 (Appeal-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A former dispatcher with the Sutter County Sheriff's Department was sentenced on Friday to a year in the county jail for embezzling thousands of dollars from the deputies employee union. Annette Jo Medeiros, 54, pleaded no contest in August to a felony embezzlement charge. Sutter County Judge Chris Chandler rejected a defense motion requesting Medeiros' conviction be reduced to a misdemeanor. Chandler denied the petition, saying Medeiros failed to show any remorse, authorities said. "A big part of it was that she was not remorseful," said Jana McClung, assistant Sutter County district attorney. The judge also ordered Medeiros to serve three years on probation and to repay the more than $10,000 that was stolen. Medeiros was charged last year with stealing from the Sutter Deputy Sheriff's Association between Jan. 1, 2009, and Jan. 30, 2010, according to court records. She was ordered to surrender to the Sutter County Jail on Jan. 2 to begin her sentence. The veteran dispatcher received no plea bargain from the Sutter County District Attorney's Office and pleaded "straight up," officials said. Medeiros was the second former Sheriff's Department employee sentenced this year in an embezzlement case. Lorinda P. Barrera was sentenced in July to serve two years in state prison for stealing more than $92,000 from the Sheriff's Department. Barrera, 49, was a civil division clerk prior to her 2009 arrest.
