Muscogee County School District security officer charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle

Dec 27, 2012 (Columbus Ledger-Enquirer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The part-time Muscogee County School District security officer who allegedly was driving an MCSD pickup truck that killed a pedestrian and sent another to the hospital Dec. 15 has been charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle and failure to maintain lane, Columbus police Lt. Tony Danford said Thursday.

According to authorities, Alfie Remone Johnson, 45, of Hilyer Drive, was driving a 2012 white Ford F-150 westbound on Steam Mill Road, near Peters Chapel AME Church, at 6:35 a.m. when the vehicle drifted onto the sidewalk and fatally struck Loretta Williams, 50, of Coronet Drive and seriously injured Linda Estell, 63, of Kennedy Street.

Johnson turned himself in last Friday at police headquarters, Danford said. He was released from the Muscogee County Jail the same day after posting bonds totalling $5,150, and his case has been bound over to state court, jail records show.

Muscogee County School District communications director Valerie Fuller said Dec. 18 that Johnson was working a scheduled shift from midnight to 8 a.m. at the time of the accident, but his departure point and destination are unclear. She also said Johnson still was working in the district's security office but not in a "mobile capacity." Thursday, MCSD officials weren't available for comment, but Johnson answered the phone in the district's security office. He declined to answer any questions.

"I'm sorry I can't talk at this moment," he said.

Second-degree homicide by vehicle is a misdemeanor in Georgia, so the maximum prison sentence Johnson faces is 12 months.

Estell was taken by ambulance to The Medical Center. She no longer is listed as a patient there. The accident report said she was seriously injured, but an update on her condition wasn't available Thursday.

Johnson wasn't injured in the wreck, the accident report says.
