BRIEF: Waukegan police warn of ATM robberies

Dec 28, 2012 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A recent rash of night-time attacks at bank ATMs in Waukegan prompted police today to issue a warning.

In the past few days two robberies and two attempted robberies were reported when people used ATMs during night-time hours at various banks in Waukegan, police said in a news release.

The victims were approached by at least two robbers after making the automated teller machine transaction and ordered to hand over the money, and sometimes to withdraw additional funds from the ATM, police said. The robbers displayed black handguns, but none of the victims was injured.

Police described the suspects as males in their late teens, wearing ski masks.

"The Waukegan Police Department stresses that people should avoid using ATMs after dark," Chief Daniel Greathouse said in the release. "If you find you must utilize an ATM after dark, please use one that is located indoors at a business such as a grocery or a department store." The release said police were working on several leads in the attacks, but no additional details were released.
