Fort Edward officials want to move ahead on Rogers Island land purchase in 2013Jan 01, 2013 (The Post-Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Fort Edward Town Board Meeting --Fort Edward Town Board, Monday afternoon Top story --One of the Town Board's first orders of business in the new year will be to work with the Village Board to complete the purchase of a section of Rogers Island as quickly as possible. "It's been eight years now, and we need to move on it now," said Supervisor Mitchell Suprenant. "We need to find out just how much we have to spend and make an offer." The town and village have been working together to purchase a privately owned part of Rogers Island to be used for recreation and, possibly, some commercial development. The purchase would also allow for expansion of the visitors center. The state is providing $400,000 in funding. The village and town must contribute and equal amount in in-kind services and spending on the project. If that is not an even match, the municipalities must make up the difference in cash. The village and town have spent money on an EPA-mandated cleanup, annexation costs and other work on the island. The town and village are waiting for the state to decide whether there will have to be a cash payment and how much it would need to be. The most recent estimate was $50,000. Suprenant said he will speak with the Village Board to start pushing harder on the project. Other news --The board appointed a new town attorney, naming Mary-Ellen Stockwell to replace Rob Winn. "I want to thank the board for the opportunity," said Winn, who told the board that since his office was now in Granville, he found it more difficult to devote the amount of time needed to serve the town. "We always discussed that you wanted someone who was close, and I think that's better." Stockwell, who had been in private practice, is joining FitzGerald Morris Baker Firth of Glens Falls as of Tuesday. --Village and town residents will have the opportunity to dispose of electronic waste at a site behind the town office building from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. The collection is being done in cooperation with Regional Computer Recycling & Recovery. Residents may drop off monitors, terminals, computers, scanners, ink cartridges, printers, fax machines, keyboards, mice and computer accessories free of charge. Other electronics, such as circuit boards, cabling and wiring, typewriters, audiovisual equipment, video game systems, cellphones, PDAs, iPods and universal power supplies may also be dropped off. Items that will not be accepted include air conditioners, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, appliances and fluorescent lamps. For further information, call 888-563-1340.
