Jan 03, 2013 (AME Info - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- QTEL INCREASES TUNISIANA STAKE BY 15 percent: Qtel has said it has signed an agreement with the Tunisian government to acquire a further 15 percent share in Tunisiana for a total of $360m, the Peninsula has reported. Wataniya, a 92.1 percent subsidiary of Qtel, has a direct holding of 75 percent in Tunisiana. Following completion of the transaction, Qtel and its subsidiaries' total holding in Tunisiana will increase to 90 percent, the firm said. "We also look forward to continuing our partnership with the Tunisian authorities as Tunisiana enters into a new phase of its development with the continuing expansion of 3G services and the launch of fixed line services in 2013," said the chairman of Qtel Group, Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohamed bin Saud Al Thani.


CANONICAL TO UNVEIL UBUNTU SMARTPHONE NEXT MONTH: Canonical, a company dedicated to commercialising open-source operating system Ubuntu, has unveiled plans to move the OS to the smaller smartphone screen, PC Magazine has reported. The company said it was targeting two key audiences with the release - the enterprise market and basic, entry-level smartphones. "We expect Ubuntu to be popular in the enterprise market, enabling customers to provision a single secure device for all PC, thin client and phone functions," Jane Silber, CEO of Canonical, said. Canonical will show the Ubuntu phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.
