Tantalus Joins Alcatel-Lucent’s ng Connect Program

TUNet® to be featured in ng Connect showcase at CES in Las Vegas January 8-11 Raleigh, NC January 8, 2013 Tantalus, a leading provider of Smart Grid communications, today announced that it has joined Alcatel-Lucent’s (EURONEXT and NYSE: ALU) ng Connect program, a multi-industry ecosystem dedicated to the creation of the new generation connected user experience. As part of the collaboration, the Tantalus Utility Network (TUNet®) will be on display at Alcatel-Lucent’s ng Connect demo at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, January 8-11, in Las Vegas in the Alcatel-Lucent Booth #31412.

Tantalus will join Alcatel-Lucent’s ng Connect program demonstration to serve as the IP-enabled smart grid gateway to the connected home through TUNet smart meters and devices. Tantalus will display a number of energy management devices and applications including smart thermostats, load management devices, smart meters and voltage regulation software that allow utilities to manage costs and reduce peak demand. Participating companies will also showcase live demos on home control products and utility-consumer communication that center on the benefits of self-healing grids and smart meters which are intended to encourage consumers to manage home energy consumption more effectively.

ng Connect is comprised of more than 190 Contributing and Associate member companies including leading network, consumer electronics, application and content providers. As part of the ng Connect program, Tantalus will build on Alcatel-Lucent’s fiber-to-the-home IP network to provide utilities with real-time smart grid connectivity using a fiber-enabled TUNet® solution. By combining the capabilities of the two networks, Tantalus and Alcatel-Lucent enable utilities to adopt advanced applications such as remote disconnect, load management, voltage regulation and smart thermostats.

Tantalus and Alcatel-Lucent have previously teamed up on customer deployments to provide real-time meter data that is converted simultaneously to IP for direct transmission through the optical network terminal (ONT). The data is then transmitted via MultiSpeak integration to the utility’s centralized Smart Grid Management System (SGMS) for use by all other utility management applications.

“As we’ve already seen through some of our utility customer deployments, Alcatel-Lucent’s fiber-to-the-home network, combined with a robust AMI system like TUNet, enables load shifting that is critical in both reducing energy use as well as managing costs,” said Eric Murray, president and CEO of Tantalus. “We’re pleased to be collaborating with Alcatel-Lucent and ng Connect to help public power utilities more efficiently manage loads while empowering consumers to take ownership of home energy use in the most convenient and efficient ways possible.” About Tantalus Tantalus provides two-way, real-time data communications networks to monitor and control electric, gas and water utilities. TUNet® – the Tantalus Utility Network – is an end-to-end WAN/LAN/HAN communications system that operates with 220 MHz RF, 900 MHz, and IP-based networks including Fiber, WiMAX and GPRS/cellular, either individually or in combination. TUNet’s patented and patents pending technologies are purpose built for the Smart Grid. The Tantalus network unites a utility’s applications, making advanced metering, outage management, power quality monitoring, load control, and distribution automation cost-effective and practical throughout both urban and rural service areas.
