Sullivan Brothers sound system bids openedJan 08, 2013 (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WATERLOO, Iowa -- Three Iowa firms are hoping to win a contract to repair the failing sound system at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center. City Council members opened bids Monday on the project, which is expected to repair the audio problems which have plagued the current 10-year-old audio/video system. DB Acoustics Inc., of Marion, submitted the apparent low bid of $71,995, which was well under the $125,000 project estimate. Maximum Sight & Sound of Waterloo bid $111,498 while Sound Concepts Inc. of Cedar Rapids bid $129,800. KJWW Engineering, a Rock Island, Ill.-based consultant hired last November to design the upgrade, will review the bids and make a recommendation to council members on which firm to choose. Building Official/Maintenance Superintendent Craig Clark said the work is not a complete rebuild of the system. "It's the head end that controls the sound system that we'll replace," he said. "The amps, the speakers, most of the wiring will all stay." The work will be financed with revenue generated from the hotel-motel tax, which is earmarked for convention center maintenance. In other business, council members: --- Opened bids for the demolition of a fire-damaged house at 936 W. Seventh St., which was acquired through a court order last year. Benton Sand and Gravel of Cedar Falls was the apparent low bidder at $15,650.
