Governor Daniels Honors Dr. Donald Brown with Sagamore of the Wabash Award

INDIANAPOLIS --(Business Wire)--

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels has honored Interactive Intelligence Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ININ) founder and CEO, Dr. Donald Brown (News - Alert), with the 2012 Sagamore of the Wabash award.

The honorary award, which pays tribute each year to someone who has made a significant contribution to life in the Hoosier state, was given to Dr. Brown based on his job creation efforts.

"Indiana needs more Don Browns," Gov. Daniels said. "He develops companies that become wildly successful and then comes up with more ideas using Indiana as his base of operations. We couldn't be more proud of Dr. Brown's accomplishments."

Dr. Brown founded his current company, Interactive Intelligence (News - Alert), in 1994, and has since grown it from a dozen-person start-up, to a publicly traded global company generating more than $230 million in annual revenues and employing more than 1,400 people.

Interactive Intelligence, a provider of unified IP business communications software and services, has added more than 600 employees over the past 24 months. Today, its northwest-side headquarters occupies four buildings totaling more than 250,000 square-feet.

Interactive Intelligence is Dr. Brown's third software company. In March 1988 he co-founded Indianapolis-based Software Artistry, a developer of customer support software that went public in March 1995 and was subsequently acquired by IBM (News - Alert) in early 1998. Dr. Brown's first software company, also based in Indiana, was acquied by Electronic Data Systems in 1987.

Dr. Brown graduated from the Indiana University (News - Alert) School of Medicine in 1985. He has two additional degrees from Indiana University, a master's degree in computer science and a bachelor's degree in physics (Phi Beta Kappa).

Gov. Daniels honored Dr. Brown with the Sagamore of the Wabash award at a special economic development event in December. The governor and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation have worked with Interactive Intelligence on several projects over the past eight years.

The Sagamore of the Wabash award was created during the term of Governor Ralph Gates, who served from 1945 to 1949. The award is the highest honor the Governor of Indiana can bestow. It's a personal tribute given to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state or to the governor.

The term "sagamore" was used by the American Indian tribes of the northeastern United States to describe a lesser chief or a great man among the tribe to whom the true chief would look for wisdom and advice. The Wabash is the state river of Indiana and a major tributary to the Ohio River.
