Winston-Salem Journal, N.C., Ask SAM column

Feb 02, 2013 (Winston-Salem Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Q: Does Time Warner Cable block you from receiving free over-the-air HD digital signals that your TV can pick up I notice that I can pick up free over-the-air channels, without an external antenna, as long as I undo the cable from the back of my TV.

--R.B.

Answer: "The video package a customer subscribes to (on cable) has no bearing on what they are able to receive over-the-air with an antenna," said Scott Pryzwansky, a spokesman for Time Warner Cable.

At home, SAM tunes in both cable and over-the-air TV channels on a TV set that has a coaxial cable connected directly in the back. For instance, cable channel 12 with its schedule grid is followed by 12-1 with WXII's over-the-air signal and 12-2 with WXII's secondary channel "Me-TV" before going on to cable channel 13.

If you are watching TV through a cable box, however, your signal is coming straight from that box and would not show any of the over-the-air channels since it is not using your TV tuner. In that case, you would need to detach the cable box before being able to tune in to the antenna channels. Those channels are available on digital cable in the 100s.

You may need to have your TV scan the available channels so it can pick up all the cable and antenna signals that are available to it. You should be able to find how to do that in the "Set Up" menu or in the TV's instruction manual.

Q: How do you register for the tryouts to sing the national anthem at a Winston-Salem Dash baseball game. I called the Dash office and was told that auditions are March 2 at Hanes Mall, but that registration was being handled through the Winston-Salem Journal.

--L.I.

Answer: The tryouts will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 2 at Hanes Mall, in the lower level near the Food Court.

Registration will start Wednesday on the Journal contest page at www.journalnow.com/entertainment/contests or through the Journal's Facebook page. Registration is open to the first 150 people, after which people can register as a "stand by." You can enter as an individual, duet, group or instrumentalist.

Reader Response After the recent answer for a reader who has had a hard time finding Smucker's Sugar Free Breakfast Syrup, A.L. wrote in to say "I had difficulty finding the Smucker's syrup and recently bought Hungry Jack Sugar Free Breakfast Syrup instead. My husband and I think it is as good as the Smucker's." Other readers wrote in to say they had seen the Smucker's syrup at the Ingles grocery store in Walnut Cove and at Food Lion stores.
