Aquinas' Brendan Douglas ready to be a Bulldog

Feb 03, 2013 (The Augusta Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- It was a wild ride, but Brendan Douglas has reached his desired destination.

The Augusta Chronicle The Aquinas football star and All-State pick was in Athens, Ga.., on Saturday, just a day after he switched his commitment from Georgia Tech to Georgia.

"I'm really pumped. I'm really excited," Douglas said. "Recruiting is a crazy process. It was a really tough decision for me, but I'm going to Georgia. I'm going to stick with that and work now and get ready to go." Douglas, who rushed for more than 1,400 yards and made more than 150 tackles this season, got a scholarship offer over the phone from Georgia Friday night. Georgia had said if it offered him a scholarship, it would need a quick answer -- and Douglas didn't wait until the next day to commit.

Douglas, who was offered as a running back, was at Georgia on Saturday for an official visit. Besides checking out the weight room and watching the women's gymnastics meet, he said he also talked with head coach Mark Richt.

Looking back at the process, Douglas said while Georgia hadn't talked with him about a scholarship "for a while," about week and a half ago, they started again. As for what made Georgia offer now, Douglas said, "I guess it just opened up." Douglas, a Georgia commit for not even two full days, now plans to sign with the Bulldogs on Wednesday, which is National Signing Day.

"It was kind of the only school that would have gotten me to change my mind," Douglas said. "It's crazy that it happened." ___ (c)2013 The Augusta Chronicle (Augusta, Ga.) Visit The Augusta Chronicle (Augusta, Ga.) at chronicle.augusta.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
