BRIEF: Sistema submits application for 800MHz spectrum auction

NEW DELHI, Feb 25, 2013 (Mint - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Sistema Shyam TeleServices Ltd (SSTL) will participate in the radio spectrum auction in March, the company said on Monday.

"SSTL is committed to its operations in India. The company today submitted its application to participate in the 800 MHz spectrum auctions in March 2013. Post auctions with the operational footprint clearly defined, the plan is to focus on SSTL's data-centric, voice-enabled strategy in select circles and build an even stronger MTS brand in India," it said in a statement.

Monday is the last day for submitting applications to participate in the auction and deposit earnest money for the telecom service areas that firms want to bid for.

SSTL did not specify the service areas it will bid for in the auction.

The company last week said it was shutting operations in 10 circles across the country to focus on building its brand and shoring up revenues prior to the auction. SSTL saw 21 of its 22 licences get cancelled due to the 2 February 2012 Supreme Court judgement that cancelled 122 telecom licences and radio spectrum allocated to nine companies in January 2008.

SSTL is expected to be the sole company bidding for the 800 megahertz (MHz) spectrum to offer services on the CDMA technology platform.
