BRIEF: Mahaska County avoids worst of snow againOSKALOOSA, Feb 28, 2013 (The Oskaloosa Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- It just sort of hung around too long. This week's snowstorm dumped upwards of five or so inches on to areas in Mahaska County, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines. This may have inconvenienced some drivers Tuesday and Wednesday, but Mahaska County was fortunate compared to other areas in Iowa. A storm impacted the Mahaska County area late this past week, as well. It dumped a little over 4 1/2 inches of snow in some areas of the county. Jamey Robinson, Mahaska County Emergency Management coordinator, said areas north of Des Moines received upwards of 14 inches of snow during the storm. One saving grace for Mahaska County was the fact that much of the snow did not stick to paved surfaces like it did on grassy areas. Much of the snow fell Tuesday afternoon and evening. Robinson noted the fact that the storm changed direction, impacting areas some forecasters weren't expecting. The city of Oskaloosa was under a snow emergency beginning 3 p.m. Tuesday, which was canceled just after 3 p.m. Wednesday. Another winter storm is on the horizon for next week, said Robinson. "We'll see what comes our way," Robinson said.
