Ambient Smart Grid Nodes Enable Remote DNP3 Data Aggregation and Control for SCADA and Distribution Automation Applications

HOUSTON and NEWTON, Mass., May 15, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Ambient Corporation (NASDAQ: AMBT), provider of a secure, flexible, and scalable communications and applications platform, today announced that all Ambient Smart Grid® Nodes fully support DNP3 protocol, which enables local data aggregation and control at distributed locations on the utility grid.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090311/AMBIENTLOGO) DNP3 protocol support allows the Ambient Smart Grid Nodes to collect, process, store, communicate, and act on data from DNP3-enabled Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) used on the grid. The nodes can act as both "slave" to the Network Operations Center (NOC) "master," and a "master" to communicate with and control multiple IEDs "slaves." The use of local computing power on each and every node enables local decision-making and action, and/or communication of selected data back to the centralized Network Operations Center - a versatile solution for multiple grid scenarios.

"Facilitating multiple smart grid applications, in parallel, is a pillar of Ambient's solution, and we recognize that existing assets are a significant part of the grid and will be for years to come. Being able to cost-effectively combine existing and new assets in any grid modernization plan, using a common communications and applications platform, avoids single-use networks and reduces unnecessary cost," said Ram Rao, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Ambient Corporation.

Ambient Corporation helps utilities modernize the grid with IP-based networking products and applications that integrate and connect existing and future grid assets on a secure, flexible, and scalable smart grid communications platform. Ambient's Smart Grid Node family enables real time data communication for multiple applications, in parallel: smart metering, distributed generation and storage, demand response, and distribution automation.
