Silver Spring Enters Into New, Key Partnerships

(FinancialWire via COMTEX) -- July 5, 2013 (FinancialWire) -- Grid efficiency technology provider DVI, a Dominion (NYSE: D) company, recently announced that it was selected by Modesto Irrigation District (MID) to provide a number of advanced applications through the adoption of DVI's "EDGE" software suite. EDGE will reportedly be used in conjunction with the existing advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployment provided by smart grid transformation solutions company Silver Spring Networks Inc. (NYSE: SSNI), furnishing MID with advanced Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) and Volt/Var Optimization (VVO) capabilities.

DVI company officials described EDGE as a modular and adaptive conservation voltage management solution enabling utilities to deploy incremental grid-side energy management that requires no behavioral changes or purchases by end-use consumers. DVI officials further ststed that EDGE provides significant and sustainable energy savings of as much as 4% through integrated planning, execution and validation of grid side energy efficiency management.

MID assistant general manager Tom Kimball commented, "MID has been looking at a number of advanced applications to leverage the capabilities of our Silver Spring AMI deployment. As we considered our CVR and VVO strategy, DVI's patented approach of using AMI data for circuit optimization planning, management and control, and measurement and verification was a clear differentiator versus other solutions available on the market." Previously, Silver Spring announced it is expanding its "Smart City" infrastructure platform through a new collaboration with street lighting control pioneer SELC. Through the collaboration, the parties said they intend to integrate Silver Spring's IPv6 networking platform with SELC's street light control systems and jointly bring the combined solution to market globally. The enhanced capabilities enable operators to leverage a standards-based network infrastructure to reduce costs over manual street light monitoring, greatly extend the lifespan of existing high-pressure sodium (HPS) street lights, and establish an open networking platform for the future deployment and management of more efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, according to the companies.

Silver Spring company officials noted that the collaborative platform is designed for the global market, to enable infrastructure operators to control street light voltage, automate variable dimming and illumination, and remotely monitor street light performance and outages through the integration of Silver Spring's IPv6-networking platform with SELC's street lighting control technologies.

Silver Spring Networks (approx market cap. US$ 1.1 bil.) provides networking platform and solutions that enable utilities to transform the power grid infrastructure into the smart grid. It was formerly known as Real Time Techcomm Inc., and changed its name in August 2002. The company was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Redwood City, California. Silver Spring employs approximately 572 people.
