BRIEF: Big tips for small spaces: Video chat with designer Paula Smail

Jul 16, 2013 (Los Angeles Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Moving to a one-bedroom apartment from a three-bedroom house confirmed what designer Paula Smail said she long suspected: Decorating a small space is no different from decorating a larger space.

"At the end of the day, your home needs to be a visual playground," Smail said. "Whatever works in a large space, works equally well in a small space as long as it is done well." That can include using large furniture, painting walls dark colors and hanging lots of art salon-style.

At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Smail will take questions from readers in a live video chat. Join us and share your own small-space problems with the designer. We'll discuss color, art and the importance of humor in creating a personal space. If you can't catch the conversation live, come back to this page any time to see the archived video.

The conversation will build on the story we posted Monday, in which Smail offered her tips on small-space decorating as part of a profile of her Burbank home.
