BPA Names Former Florida Power and Light Executive VP of Engineering and Technical Services
(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 14 -- The Bonneville Power Administration issued the following news release:
The Bonneville Power Administration has named Richard Shaheen its Transmission Services' vice president of Engineering and Technical Services. Shaheen, a registered professional engineer in the state of Florida, recently served as senior director for Engineering and Technical Services at Florida Power and Light, the largest rateregulated utility in Florida and the third largest in the United States. He will begin his new role at BPA in September.
"Richard Shaheen's 25 years of progressive leadership and technical experience in a large electric utility will serve the short- and long-term needs of BPA's Transmission Engineering and Technical Services organization very well," said Larry Bekkedahl, senior vice president for Transmission Services.
Florida Power and Light has 4.6 million customers. It is the principal subsidiary of NextEra Energy, a Fortune 500 company and the largest generator in the U.S. of renewable energy from the wind and sun with more than 70,000 miles of power lines.
As an FPL senior director for Engineering and Technical Services, and previously as leader of Distribution and Transmission Operations, Shaheen drove critical business initiatives in engineering and project management, process and technology improvements, system reliability, smart grid, environmental services, safety and compliance. He also received FPL's highest quality award for his reliability team, and while leading Operations, he improved safety performance levels and achieved FPL Distribution and Transmission business units' lowest recordable accident rate by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Based on reliability performance reported to the Florida Public Service Commission, FPL was No. 1 among Florida's investor-owned utilities for five years running.
"BPA is a premier organization with a great history of serving the Pacific Northwest for over 75 years. It's within one of the most exciting, challenging and rewarding industries today," said Shaheen. "I look forward to being part of the leadership BPA demonstrates in so many critical areas and contributing to the excellence it delivers."
As leader of BPA's Engineering and Technical Services organization, Shaheen will have responsibility for implementing Transmission Services' $500 million capital program, providing technical support for the transmission maintenance program and providing real property services to BPA. Additionally, he will serve as BPA's principal engineer and key policy formulator in leading the design, material specification, coordination, project management and construction of major transmission infrastructure projects necessary to sustain and improve the reliability of the existing transmission system and incorporate new generation facilities.
Shaheen holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida and a master's in business administration from Florida Atlantic University.
The vice president of Engineering and Technical Services position was vacated when Bekkedahl was promoted last December.
