Ambient Smart Grid Nodes Implement IEC 61850 for Distribution and Substation Automation

NEWTON, Mass. and AMSTERDAM, Oct. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Ambient Corporation (NASDAQ:AMBT), provider of a secure, flexible, and scalable smart grid communications and applications platform, today announced that all Ambient Smart Grid® Nodes have native support for International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850. IEC 61850 is a global protocol for substations and electric power systems.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090311/AMBIENTLOGO) IEC 61850 support allows the Ambient Smart Grid Nodes to collect, store, and communicate data from Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and filter the amount of data backhauled. The flexible, node-based communications architecture, helps streamline grid operations, ensures optimal performance and effectively addresses overall system availability and security to meet the challenging requirements of substation and distribution automation.

"Seamless communication is a key enabler of grid modernization. Ambient's unique ability to facilitate multiple smart grid applications and communications technologies, avoids single-use networks. Through facilitating interoperability and field-based data management utilizing common utility protocols, like IEC61850 and DNP3, we can have an impact on reducing overall network costs," said David Masters, Chief Technology Officer at Ambient Corporation.

Ambient Corporation helps utilities modernize the grid with IP-based networking products and applications that integrate and connect existing and future grid assets on a secure, flexible, and scalable smart grid communications platform. Ambient's Smart Grid Node family enables real time data communication for multiple applications, in parallel: smart metering, distributed generation and storage, demand response, and distribution automation.
