Ambient Smart Grid nodes implement IEC 61850 protocol

Oct 28, 2013 (MarketLine via COMTEX) -- Ambient Corporation, a provider of a smart grid communications and applications platform, has announced that all Ambient Smart Grid nodes have native support for International Electrotechnical Commission, or IEC, 61850, a protocol for substations and electric power systems.

IEC 61850 support allows the Ambient Smart Grid Nodes to collect, store, and communicate data from Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and filter the amount of data backhauled. The flexible, node-based communications architecture, helps streamline grid operations, ensures optimal performance and effectively addresses overall system availability and security to meet the challenging requirements of substation and distribution automation.

"Seamless communication is a key enabler of grid modernization. Ambient's unique ability to facilitate multiple smart grid applications and communications technologies, avoids single-use networks. Through facilitating interoperability and field-based data management utilizing common utility protocols, like IEC61850 and DNP3, we can have an impact on reducing overall network costs," said David Masters, Chief Technology Officer at Ambient Corporation.
