Dellwood alderwoman Linda Cunningham dies [St. Louis Post-Dispatch :: ]

(St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 02--Dellwood Alderwoman Linda Cunningham died Friday (Jan. 31, 2014) after a lengthy illness, Mayor Reggie Jones said Saturday.

Jones said that Cunningham passed away at Mercy Hospital St. Louis. He said the Board of Aldermen and the city staff are mourning the loss of "one of the most diligent and tenacious" members to sit on that board.

Cunningham was first elected alderwoman of Ward 1 in April 2011, and soon gained the reputation of being a tough advocate, able to push ahead with projects including street repairs and repaving.

She was re-elected last April, and she chaired both the Street and Parks and Recreation committees.

Last year, Cunningham was among four Dellwood board members who supported a plan to turn over the city's policing duties to St. Louis County.

"She drove the ward daily and was very diligent with residential complaints," Jones said. "She tackled those right away. She was always on the ball and working for her constituents." He said that Cunningham moved from Kansas City to St. Louis in 1972, where she began working as a telecommunications operator assistant for McDonnell Douglas Corp., which later became Boeing Co. She lived in Dellwood for more than 30 years, and retired from Boeing last year as an administrative assistant.

"She was a fighter for things she believed in," Jones said. "She didn't give up." ___ (c)2014 the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Visit the St. Louis Post-Dispatch at www.stltoday.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
