BRIEF: AEGIS Ashore installation to be soon shipped to Romania [Agerpres, Bucharest, Romania :: ]
(Agerpres (Romania) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 16--BUCHAREST -- AEGIS Ashore installation built at the Lockheed Martin test base in Moorestown, New Jersey, is designed to be fully dismantled with a view to being shipped to Romania, Defence News has reported.
In a few weeks, all the system components -- the radars, the computers, the walls and floors and stairs -- will be packed up, nearly all of it ready for shipping in about 60 container boxes to a field in Romania.
And in about a year, everything will be reassembled and re-energized to become the first operational shore-based element of the European Phased Adaptive Approach -- a US plan to protect Europe from ballistic missile attack, the publication says.
The system is the first land-based version of the famous AEGIS combat system and is able to defend wide areas from enemy attack. AEGIS systems routinely are able to simultaneously track more than 100 targets.
A ground-breaking ceremony for the AEGIS Ashore installation was held on Oct. 28 at Deveselu Air Base in southern Romania (179 km south-west of Bucharest).
