Dr. Ethel Harris Named Enid A. Neidle Scholar in Residence for Women

SAN ANTONIO --(Business Wire)--

Ethel Harris, D.D.S., Assistant Professor and Director of the Safety Compliance Department, SOD Clinical Affairs, at the Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, TN, was awarded the 2014 American Dental Education Association (ADEA)/Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in-Residence Program for Women. The award was announced on March 16 at the 2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in San Antonio, TX.

Since 1994, ADEA has promoted the advancement of women in dental education by providing the opportunity for a full-time woman faculty member with a primary teaching appointment in a predoctoral, or an advanced dental education program, to explore issues affecting women faculty through a three-month scholar-in-residence program.

"The Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in-Residence Program for Women will provide Dr. Harris with a unique opportunity as a dental educator to concentrate on critical issues affecting the oral health of women," says Stephen K. Young, D.D.S., M.S., Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors. "Her research will lead to the creation of a model for improving awareness of addiction and its impact on oral health."

"Johnson & Johnson is proud to recognize Dr. Ethel Harris for her leadership in improving women's oral health," says Ellie McShane, Associate Brand Manager for Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products. "She is a strong voice for women recovering from addiction. Due to her efforts, we hope that more women will seek treatment to stay healthy."

Women in recovery from substance abuse are one of the most critical and growing at-risk populations for poor oral health and hygiene. Accordig to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 6.9 million women need treatment for their addiction but are not receiving it.

The program's fellowship will allow Dr. Harris to spend three months at the ADEA office in Washington, DC, working with the ADEA Policy Center on a variety of activities designed to explore issues facing women faculty, including promotion, advancement, and tenure policies, entry and re-entry into the workforce, child and elder care, women's health, work patterns and advanced education and research opportunities.

The program honors Enid A. Neidle, former President of ADEA (1985-86). Under her leadership, ADEA adopted its policy of promoting the advancement of women in dental education.
