(Western Daily Press (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Eldreds Fine Art Auctioneers The early spring sales at Eldreds Fine Art Auctioneers have proved to be very successful, with strong results from live internet and telephone bidders around the globe.

In a very competitive market, interest in quality antique furniture, European and Oriental ceramics, antique and gem-set jewellery, works of art and oil and watercolour paintings remains high with many lots selling well above their pre-sale estimate.

Amongst the notable results was an emerald and diamond ring which sold for Pounds 4,000; despite its relatively small size, its proportions, design and quality won through.

Of particular interest amongst the art lots, and hotly contested by both internet and telephone bidders, was a watercolour of Gullane and Golf Course by Frank Watson Wood which sold for Pounds 3,000.

A signed print by John Piper more than tripled its estimate to be sold for Pounds 1,700 and a small painting by Fred Yates, measuring just 18cm x 24cm and titled Muffins Today Your Majesty also exceeded its pre-sale estimate, selling finally for Pounds 1,700.

TURN TO PAGE 36 The furniture section saw some notable results also, proving that the right items of particular quality can still find their place in a difficult furniture market.

A 19th century oak stick stand in the Gothic style, purported to be from Kitley House, eventually sold well over estimate at Pounds 1,600.

A small, elegant 17th century oyster-veneered walnut chest of drawers doubled its estimate of Pounds 2,000-Pounds 3,000, bringing the hammer down at Pounds 4,100.

Two rare tin ingots from the Tamar Tin Smelting Co, weighing approximately 13kg each, sold for Pounds 1,900 and Pounds 2,000 - well over other recent results for similar ingots.

A Moorcroft footed bowl, in the rare 'Moonlit Blue' design, managed Pounds 1,100, despite having a chip to the rim.

Eldreds' next two auctions will have plenty to attract potential bidders - so make a note in your diary.

The forthcoming Antiques, Art, Silver and Jewellery sale will be held on Thursday, May 29 at 11am, while the following month there is the Collectors' Items, Stamps and Coins sale on Thursday, June 26 at 11am.
