CEA Earns Hearing Loss Association of America's National Access Award

ARLINGTON, Va. --(Business Wire)--

Today, the Consumer Electronics Association (News - Alert) (CEA)® received the Hearing Loss Association of America's (HLAA) 2014 National Access Award in recognition of CEA's continued advocacy for emerging technologies that help improve the lives of people with hearing loss. HLAA is the nation's leading organization representing people with hearing loss and promotes new technology, medical research and legislation that will alleviate the effects of hearing loss.

"Technology has the power to transform the lives of all people," said Gary Shapiro (News - Alert), CEA president and CEO. "On behalf of CEA and our members, we are honored to receive HLAA's prestigious National Access Award. CEA and our members are committed to working with HLAA, the hearing loss community and all in the accessibility community to enable consumers of all abilities to access technology and enjoy the many benefits technological innovation brings to our world."

CEA has been a champion of industry-driven solutions to ensure innovative technologies and services are accessible to disabled consumers. At the 2013 International CES (News - Alert)®, owned and produced by CEA, the Accessible & Universal Design Technologies category was added to the Innovations Awards, recognizing innovation in accessibility and rewarding companies that make advances in the area. Past honorees include Personal Sound with LINX FUSION, ReSound LiNX and Tobii EyeMobile.

In 2009, CEA formed the CEA Foundation, a public, national foundation that links seniors and people with disabilities to technologies that can enhance their lives. In 2013, the foundation presented HLAA with a grant to fund a hands-on, train-the-trainer program on hearing-assistive devices and emerging technologies for consumers with heaing loss. The foundation's grant helped HLAA raise awareness for those suffering from hearing loss by highlighting a variety of assistive and emerging technologies that are available to keep people with disabilities healthy, active and safe.

"The members of CEA are embracing technology that is accessible to people with disabilities," said Anna Gilmore Hall, executive director, HLAA. "They are creative and innovative and are driving the market toward new products that will dramatically improve the lives of people with hearing loss and other disabilities. We are excited that they had the foresight to create the CEA Foundation, which is committed to improving the lives of seniors and people with disabilities."

The HLAA Convention 2014, held in Austin, Texas, features three days of educational programming, including "Emerging Technology for People with Hearing Loss," a session hosted by the foundation on June 27. The panel will include CEA member companies AfterShokz, Etymotic Research and Panasonic, as well as other guests discussing their technologies.

Previous recipients of HLAA's National Access Award include CTIA (News - Alert) - The Wireless Association, Brown University and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
