Sen. Brown Applauds U.S. Department of Agriculture's Appointment of Ohio State University Professor to Board of New Research Foundation

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, July 24 -- The office of Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, has issued the following news release: Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) applauded the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) appointment of Dr. Yehia Mohamed "Mo" Saif, Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University (OSU), to the board of directors of its new Foundation for Food and Agricultural Research (FFAR).

Dr. Saif, a retired professor, taught in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine. He now conducts research for OSU's Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center's (OARDC) Food Animal Health Research Program.

"Dr. Saif has excellent experience in both veterinary medicine and agricultural research and will do well advising the Department of Agriculture on these matters," Brown said. "His appointment is a testament to leadership of Ohio's citizens and the exceptional research conducted at Ohio's universities." The 2014 Farm Bill authorized $200 million for the USDA's Foundation for Food and Agricultural Research that must be matched by non-federal funds.

FFAR is a non-profit corporation that seeks private donations to fund research in the areas of agricultural and food security; food safety; plant and animal health; agricultural systems and technology; renewable energy, natural resources, and environment; and nutrition and health.

Brown is the first Ohioan to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee in more than 40 years. In 2014, he was part of the Senate Farm Bill Conference Committee that successfully negotiated a five-year farm bill that had been stalled for more than three years.
