State School Chief Candidate Marshall Tuck to Address Sacramento Press Club Sept. 25

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

This year's race for State Superintendent of Public Instruction is drawing more attention - and campaign spending - than the race has seen in years. The challenger who forced the incumbent into a November runoff will address the Sacramento Press Club at noon on Thursday, September 25.

Marshall Tuck, a Democrat and former head of the Green Dot charter school system, is challenging Democratic incumbent Tom Torlakson, who has the backing of the state's powerful teachers unions. The nonpartisan race has attracted outsize spending and attention, particularly after a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ruled that California's teacher tenure laws are "a broken ystem."

School reformers have unified around the so-called Vergara decision, but the state's top elected Democrats oppose it. Torlakson supported Attorney General Kamala Harris' decision to appeal, while Tuck and other reformers hope to force a conversation on inequality in California's schools, even in the wake of voter-approved tax increases for education.

In addition to his role at the unionized Green Dot schools, Tuck most recently served asĀ founding CEO for the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's effort with the Los Angeles Unified School District to turn around 17 struggling schools.

The lunch, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., will take place at the Capitol Plaza Ballroom, 1025 Ninth Street, 3rd Floor, Sacramento, CA (News - Alert). Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Priced at $29 for members and $40 for non-members, tickets may be purchased at www.sacpressclub.org. The RSVP deadline is 5 pm. Tuesday, September 23.
