Healthcare Trends Institute Announces FSA Study Results and Insights

The Healthcare Trends Institute, an educational resource for employers, employees, and other healthcare benefits stakeholders, has announced the results of an employer survey completed during winter 2014 about employer adoption of and rationale behind choosing the flexible spending account (FSA) carryover option.

2014 Flexible Spending Account Benchmark Study, available as a free download from the Healthcare Trends Institute here, answered many of the questions posed by employers after the 2013 IRS announcement of changes to the FSA rules, including the following:

  • How many employers adopted the carryover option in 2014? How many intend to do so in 2015?
  • What percentage of employees participated in a healthcare FSA in 2014? What was the average contribution?
  • Were there any challenges in implementing a rollover adoption? How did employers overcome these challenges, if any?

"The changes announced by the IRS in fall 2013 left organizations with decisions that directly affected the lives and finances of employees," said Tiffany Wirth, Executive Director of the Healthcare Trends Institute. "This study hopes to help employers choose confidently their next steps in FSA strategy as prt of an overall benefits offering."
