Ribbon Tells Customer Stories

Ribbon Communications (News - Alert) this week at Perspectives18 offered details on its work with the City of Los Angeles, the Department of Defense, Etisalat UAE, SoftBank, Verizon (News - Alert), and others.

The City of Los Angeles is using Ribbon’s Kandy Business Services. The municipality had 35 PBXs, many of them from Nortel (News - Alert), and hundreds of key systems. Ribbon CMO Patrick Joggerst said the city is transitioning its users off those platforms and on to the Ribbon cloud-based unified communications offering. The Ribbon offering serves 15,000 City of Los Angeles users now. As many as 50,000 City of Los Angeles users could migrate to Kandy (News - Alert) Business Services in the future.

The customer is also taking advantage of Ribbon’s CPaaS offering. The Los Angeles Public Library is leveraging the visual attendant feature of Ribbon CPaaS. That will provide customers with click-to-call capabilities from the library website. The city plans to expand visual attendant to other L.A. city agencies in the future. Ribbon Communications also created a Kandy Alert System for the L.A.

As for the Department of Defense, that represented the largest ever TDM to VoIP transition, said Joggerst. It involved 50,000 users.

That project was completed at the beginning of this year. It saw the DoD rip out legacy Avaya and Nortel switches and replace them with a single rack of JITC-compliant application servers. The DoD benefitted from AC, power, and real estate savings as a result.

Etisalat is a service provider with 16 properties in the United Arab Emirates and Africa. Because of the UAE’s strict lawful intercept requirements, Ribbon created a private cloud version of Kandy Business Services for this customer.

Plans call for Etisalat to grow to 40,000 seats over the next 18 months. This customer also is looking at using WebRTC capabilities from Ribbon’s CPaaS solution to provide users easy access to video appointments with remote doctors through Etisalat’s partner Mobile Doctors.

Verizon is Ribbon’s largest customer by far, said Joggerst. The company launched its SBC-as-a-service at the beginning of the year. That service, which employs the software version of the Sonus SBC, sells SBC functionality by the session to enterprise customers. (Ribbon was created through the merger of GENBAND (News - Alert) and Sonus.)

Additionally, Ribbon is working with a tier 1 carrier in Asia Pac. In the next three weeks that carrier expects to roll out a new SOHO service based on Kandy cloud.
