DBOS Raises $8.5M Led by Tech Pioneer Mike Stonebraker to Revolutionize Cloud Computing

DBOS Inc., a developer of cloud-native operating systems, secured $8.5 million in Seed funding and unveiled its first product offering, DBOS Cloud. Engine Ventures and Construct Capital led the funding round, joined by Sinewave and GutBrain Ventures. Engine Ventures' general partner, Reed Sturtevant, now sits on the DBOS board alongside industry luminaries Andy Palmer, Michael Stonebraker (News - Alert), and Peter Kraft.

At the helm of DBOS is co-founder and CTO Mike Stonebraker, a distinguished figure in the tech world known for his contributions as the creator of Postgres and recipient of the Turing Award. Stonebraker co-founded DBOS alongside Matei Zaharia, the co-founder and CTO of Databricks, and a collaborative team of computer scientists from MIT (News - Alert) and Stanford University.

DBOS aims to revolutionize the landscape of cloud application development by streamlining processes for building, deploying, and securing applications. Leveraging years of intensive research and development conducted jointly at MIT and Stanford, the team has devised a groundbreaking solution in the form of DBOS (database-oriented operating system).

"The cloud has outgrown 33-year-old Linux, and it's time for a new approach," said Mike Stonebraker. "If you run the OS on a distributed database as DBOS does, fault-tolerance, multi-node scaling, state management, observability, and security get much easier. You don't need containers or orchestration layers, and you write less code because the OS is doing more for you."

DBOS operates by hosting operating system services atop a high-performance distributed database, offering a scalable, fault-tolerant, and cyber-resilient foundation for cloud-native applications. An innovative aspect of DBOS lies in its capability to store all system data, state, and logs in SQL-accessible tables, facilitating seamless access and management.

The culmination of this pioneering effort is DBOS Cloud, a transactional Functions as a Service platform that empowers developers to construct and execute serverless functions, workflows, and applications seamlessly. DBOS Cloud offers a distinctive development environment that streamlines the intricacies of building, deploying, and managing applications. It also elevates cybersecurity measures and enhances cyber-resilience, ensuring a robust and secure experience for users throughout the application lifecycle.

"With DBOS, developers can build applications in days that now take months on conventional cloud platforms," said Matei Zaharia, Chief Technologist and Co-Founder of Databricks, who is also a Co-Founder of DBOS. "Moreover, developers can seamlessly use the same tools they use today. So, there is very little learning curve to benefit from the rapid development, guaranteed transactions, and increased cybersecurity of DBOS."

"The cybersecurity implications of DBOS are truly transformative," said DBOS co-founder and former Head of Cybersecurity Practice at BCG Platinion, Michael Coden. "By simplifying the cloud application stack, DBOS greatly reduces the attack surface of cloud applications. On top of that, DBOS enables self-detection of cyberattacks within seconds without the use of expensive external analytics tools, and it can restore itself to a pre-attack state in minutes. It's a DevSecOps game-changer."
