Pritam Mukherjee, Lead Specialist for Information Technology (IT) Application and Data Security, Governance, Technology Risk and Compliance at the New York Power Authority (NYPA), presented a case study describing the power utility’s application security and governance journey, integrating SAP (News - Alert) Analytics Cloud (SAC) as part of its digital transformation process, at the ASUG Conference held at Google NYC. The conference presented by Americas’ SAP Users’ Group (ASUG) is the premier event in North America for organizations currently using or considering SAP systems.

NYPA is the largest state public power organization, providing approximately 25% of power generation in New York, and approximately 30% of the state’s high-voltage transmission system. Mr. Mukherjee’s presentation, representing ASUG Best Practices, discussed how NYPA implemented SAC as part of the utility’s digitization efforts, with a focus on maximizing efficiency by eliminating manual data handling; introducing automation; improving data accuracy; and streamlining and centralizing forecasting and reporting data.

As IT (SAP) application security and GRC Lead, Mr. Mukherjee managed the implementation and maintenance of SAP Security and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) solutions, including role design, user provisioning, and access controls. He designed and developed the SAP Analytics Cloud Security system architecture and policies governing the organization’s multiple business processes, and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance and Risk Framework, including AI ethics and Machine Learning (ML) technology models and platforms for his organization’s vision and mission. Mr. Mukherjee additionally conducted risk and vulnerability assessments to identify and mitigate potential security risks in IT and business systems, and ensure compliance with industry regulations. This required his collaboration with stakeholders in cross-functional teams across 14 departments to implement secure SAC modules for Financial Planning & Analysis, Budgets Digitization, and others, that in aggregate involved nearly 65 data feeds and more than 40 profit centers across a 10-year planning horizon.

While overseeing digitization efforts, Mr. Mukherjee was engaged in leveraging AI and ML emerging technologies to facilitate the utility company’s commitment to sustainable product development towards green and clean energy. He additionally conducted security awareness training programs for employees enterprise-wide to promote an IT security-conscious culture, which he instills in the IT and business teams by managing internal and external resources, including hiring, project and operational engagement, employee training, and career development.

Mr. Mukherjee has worked at the forefront of IT for 15 years, and is widely regarded as a subject matter expert in IT Application Security (News - Alert), GRC, AI, ML, and Financial Data Analytics (Fintech). In June 2023 he received a Master’s degree in Financial Innovation and Technology (MFIT) from the prestigious Smith School of Business at Queens University in Ontario, Canada, which pioneered advanced education programs integrating finance and technology. He previously earned a Master of Technology degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Calcutta, India, and a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Engineering degree from India’s Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College.
