The cloud computing landscape has, by and large, been dominated by a handful of major players. They each vie for customer loyalty with unique strengths and specializations. And for businesses locked into specific platforms, migrating applications and data across clouds could be a complex and costly endeavor.
Therefore, to shake things up a bit, Oracle and Google Cloud announced a strategic partnership that will let businesses easily integrate and leverage the strengths of both platforms. This collaboration simplifies application modernization and migration for organizations seeking to unlock the full potential of the cloud.
At the center of the partnership lies Google (News - Alert) Cloud's Cross-Cloud Interconnect, initially available in 11 strategic regions. This offering allows customers to deploy general-purpose workloads across both clouds without incurring cross-cloud data transfer charges. Later this year, the partnership will introduce "Oracle (News - Alert) Database@Google Cloud," a solution that delivers high levels of Oracle database and network performance, along with feature and pricing parity with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, or OCI.
Through this joint go-to-market strategy, Oracle Database@Google Cloud will cater to enterprises across various industries, including finance, healthcare, retail and manufacturing. The solution provides direct access to Oracle database services running on dedicated OCI instances deployed within Google Cloud data centers. The primary benefit lies in accelerating cloud migration, which lets businesses modernize their IT infrastructure and use Google Cloud's infrastructure, tooling and AI services like Vertex (News - Alert) AI and Gemini foundation models.
Customers can expect a multitude of advantages.
First, flexible options streamline the migration of Oracle databases to Google Cloud. A simplified purchasing experience through Google Cloud Marketplace allows customers to leverage existing Google Cloud commitments and existing Oracle license benefits.
Google Cloud and Oracle collaboratively provide a unified customer support experience. So, their partnership also unlocks the simplicity, security and low latency of a unified operating environment within Google Cloud. And customers can bridge the gap between Oracle data and Google's AI services to build intelligent applications across various functions like customer service, employee services and creative studios.
Furthermore, Oracle will take the reins of operating and managing Oracle database services directly within Google Cloud data centers, with initial deployment planned for North American and European regions. Key services like Exadata, Autonomous Database, and Real Application Clusters will launch later this year in select regions, followed by expansion to additional locations worldwide.
"Customers want the flexibility to use multiple clouds," said Larry Ellison (News - Alert), Oracle Chairman and Chief Technology Officer. "To meet this growing demand, Google and Oracle are seamlessly connecting Google Cloud services with the very latest Oracle Database technology. By putting Oracle Cloud Infrastructure hardware in Google Cloud datacenters, customers can benefit from the best possible database and network performance."
For broader multicloud flexibility, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Google Cross-Cloud Interconnect provide the ability to deploy workloads across both platforms without incurring data transfer charges. Customers can initially leverage interconnect capabilities in 11 regions, with further expansion planned. This secure, high-throughput private connection between the two cloud giants allows for:
- Best-of-breed innovation: Businesses leverage the most advantageous combination of services based on features, performance and cost considerations across Oracle and Google Cloud offerings.
- Seamless multicloud networking: A direct interconnection ensures low-latency, first-class network performance for multicloud deployments.
- Hybrid application management: Run critical Oracle applications like E-Business Suite and PeopleSoft on OCI while using Google Cloud's infrastructure for distributed data storage needs.
- Cloud-native development: Build innovative cloud-native applications using Google Cloud's enterprise-grade AI technologies and OCI's capabilities.
"Oracle and Google Cloud have many joint enterprise customers," said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet. "This new partnership will help these customers use Oracle database and applications in concert with Google Cloud's innovative platform and AI capabilities."
This is a collaboration to keep track of, for sure. It will be interesting to see exactly how the collaboration unlocks a new frontier for organizations seeking to accelerate cloud adoption and drive innovation.
